Often portrayed as a necessary but unattractive part of the lighting scheme, emergency lighting is in fact, a safety critical system and is a legal requirement within commercial premises.
It is provided to help facilitate the immediate and safe evacuation of occupants from the premises in times of emergency and as such, must be afforded the same importance and diligence of other such systems.
Short cuts and corner cutting such as the specification of sub-standard components and ineffective maintenance schedules, brought about by budgetary constraints can all result in non-compliance, compromising the safety of the building occupants.
When it comes to designing emergency lighting, there are many factors to consider. Not only must the emergency lighting system be fit for purpose, but it must also meet stringent safety and compliance standards.
Meeting these standards can impact financially, both in terms of the design and specification, through to the installation, and the on-going maintenance of the system.
The installation of emergency lighting is only the start when assessing if an emergency lighting system is compliant. It is often the case that the end user, whether it's a landlord, occupier or employer, is unaware that it is their responsibility to ensure that the emergency lighting system is checked and maintained in accordance with BS5266-1.
Those that are aware, often resort to hiring a dedicated individual to perform regular checks and document, resulting in additional costs and further demands on resources to perform this task.
There is another way - an intuitive DALI emergency test and monitoring system is as straightforward as a simple test.
Introducing N-light CONNECT
The N-Light CONNECT touch panel is a DALI emergency lighting test and monitoring system from Mackwell. It resolves many of the compliance issues faced in emergency lighting today.
