Clarion Housing Group has revealed the winners of the fourth William Sutton Prize at an awards ceremony which took place on Wednesday.

The winner of The William Sutton Prize for Sustainability and Placemaking is Mole Architects for their proposal for a zero-carbon homebuilding system, designed to support the development of Group-Build community housing.

The system sets out a step-by-step approach from land purchase to completed building, facilitating community-led housing and tackling associated barriers, with the aim of enabling greater numbers of people to come together to build their own homes.

The aim is to use the £20,000 prize fund to contribute towards the development of an illustrated document and website, forming a toolkit that sets out the approach to engage landowners, local authorities, politicians, and future residents.

It will also help fund initial design work on a modular housing system, comprising a building system and engagement model.

Salix Homes: Further reading

Partners Salix Homes, The English Cities Fund (ECF) and contractor, Eric Wright Construction, joined together to celebrate the another first for Salford - the start of 96 Passivhaus-accredited affordable apartments.

Being built at Greenhaus in the heart of the city, the scheme is the first of its kind in the North of England.

Greenhaus is part of ECF's £1 billion, 50-acre Salford Central regeneration and will bring forward one and two-bedroom apartments.

Properties that are built to Passivhaus standards enjoy reduced energy consumption of around 90% compared to traditional housing stock.

The homes at Greenhaus will benefit from triple-glazed windows and the latest in insulation technology, using minimal energy for heating and cooling.

The development, which is located opposite Salford Cathedral, will also include new public Electric Vehicle parking spaces, a public square and greatly enhanced landscaping in the area.
