Residents consulted on proposal to use former garage site for factory built homes

Posted 11.06.21
Bristol City Council: Further reading

Bristol City Council is proposing to develop a former garage in Horfield to deliver 9 affordable homes on the site.

The City Council has drawn up a design for the site and it is consulting residents for feedback on their likes and dislikes about it.

As part of the Innovate UK project to research modern methods of construction, the City Council is working with Project Etopia, who is likely to be appointed to deliver the project.

The proposal will showcase the Gap House, high quality sustainable homes which are designed to fit onto small garage sites. They will be factory built and trial innovative technologies.

As manufacture of the houses would largely be carried out off-site, there will be less disruption than a traditional build during the construction phase.

Material shortages dampening small builders' recovery

Federation of Master Builders (FMB): Further reading

While workloads and activity remain strong, the skyrocketing price of building materials continues to dampen construction's economic recovery and is disproportionately impacting on the industry's smallest firms.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said:

"Rising material prices are continuing to limit the ability of local builders to build back better from the pandemic.

"It's incredibly worrying to hear that the overall rate of input price inflation was the highest on record. This is consistent with FMB State of Trade data that shows 93% of builders reported material price increases in Q1 of this year.

"Against the backdrop of high levels of inquiries for building work, it's imperative that smaller businesses have the same access to materials as the larger firms during these difficult times."

Established in 1941 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized (SME) construction firms, the FMB is independent and non-profit making, lobbying for members' interests at both the national and local level.
