On 24 May 2021, the Government's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) invited English and Welsh local authorities to apply for funding to support them in enforcing the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) Regulations.
If a local authority believes a landlord has failed to fulfill their obligations under the MEES Regulations, it can serve the landlord with a Compliance Notice.
If a breach is confirmed, the landlord may receive a financial penalty of up to £5,000 per property.
