The latest English Housing Survey (EHS) confirms there has been a 1.1 million increase in households occupied by someone aged 65 and over in the last decade - a 20% rise.
Ageing Better is calling on government, local authorities, housing associations and private landlords to do more to help people in later life to live independently and safely in their own home.
Its own research shows that low-cost home adaptations can have a huge impact on a person's health, wellbeing and independence.
Where housing is unsuitable, people often end up using potentially dangerous coping strategies - such as limiting food and drink to avoid using the bathroom, using baby wipes instead of bathing, and sleeping on the sofa.

The Housing LIN has published its latest Case Study (no 149), which focuses on the award-winning Village 135 community and retirement living hub in Wythenshawe, Manchester.
Developed by Wythenshawe Community Housing Group, the village boasts 135 apartments across two sites, featuring a glazed footbridge crossing a busy road that connects two existing, remodelled residential tower blocks.
Careful consideration has been administered in the design of the village to incorporate HAPPI principles, Lifetime Home standards, Secure by Design requirements and it has achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating.
The development has been awarded the following titles:
