After recently giving evidence to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee, Riverside's Executive Director of Care and Support, John Glenton, offers his views on the future of supported housing for older people.
His article not only comments on the well known benefits for the elderly of living in a retirement community, but also on the potential for effective retirement housing to help address the wider affordable housing shortage.
He also notes the obstacles - including the Government's decision to cap Housing Benefit for supported and sheltered housing customers at the rate of the Local Housing Allowance, which impacts on tenants living in retirement living schemes.
