119 affordable homes on the Salford horizon as work starts on site

An extensive refurbishment programme to create 119 homes for affordable rent has begun at Matthias Court in Salford, Manchester.

The Guinness Partnership, which owns the former student accommodation block is, ploughing nearly £9 million into the project to fund major internal and external works.

The 15 storey building will be transformed through new roofing, an attractive new external render finish and feature entrance, double-glazing and paving, as well as external decoration works, new gates and a car park.

Each apartment will benefit from upgraded internal layouts, new kitchens, bathrooms and floor coverings, along with a complete overhaul of communal areas. A brand new centrally fired gas heating system is planned for the block which will dramatically reduce energy costs for residents.

In addition to a mix of 61 one bed and 58 two bedroom apartments, a further two apartments will be created on the ground floor which will be specially adapted for those with disabilities. The Guinness Partnership has secured funding from the Homes and Communities Agency and works are expected to be complete in summer 2016.
