Fraud Drives Welsh Homelessness Charity Into Administration

Posted 20.01.15

Cyrenians Cymru Board of Trustees have taken a decision to declare the charity insolvent and enter administration.

Since 1973 the charity has been at the forefront of tackling homelessness and poverty in Swansea and beyond. It currently has 10 projects with 75 staff offering support to the most vulnerable in the community.

An independent financial investigation, which was initiated by the Board and Senior Management towards the end of last year, uncovered a systematic and extensive suspected fraud.

The fraud was reported to the police in December and is now the subject of a police investigation. Two employees from the charity's Finance Department have been dismissed and arrested.

The consequences have been devastating for the charity. Monies due to keep services running have been frozen, in accordance with the policies of funders, and therefore the charity is unable to meet its financial obligations.

It has been working strenuously with the Welsh Government and other partners to keep the charity afloat, but without success.
