Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme - Clare's Law

In March, Claire's Law went nationwide, meaning that nationally women have been given the "right to know" their partner's history - which should be a significant tool in tackling Domestic Violence.

It was named after Clare Wood, who was strangled and set on fire at her home in Salford by her ex-boyfriend George Appleton. This, for the first time gives women the right to know if a partner has a history of domestic violence.

The scheme, officially known as the, Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, is designed to provide victims with information that may protect them from a potentially abusive situation and works by allowing the police, on request, to disclose information about a partner's previous history of domestic violence or violent acts.

An interesting summary of the legislation and how it works has been provided by Community Safety Professionals (CSP) and it can be accessed via this link.
