Rent Arrears Conference

This conference comes comes at a crucial time. The UK's social housing sector continues to rise to the challenges presented by the uncertain economic climate. Residents require ever greater assistance with their tenancy obligations and effective income collection is vital in ensuring that housing associations remain financially viable.

The Government's welfare reform programme is progressing, with Universal Credit and direct housing payments having major implications. Residents are already required to adjust their budgets to account for the benefit cap and, in many cases, under occupancy penalties.

Tackling Tenancy Fraud - Capita Conferences
21st February 2014, Central London

Alex Esson

Key speakers from across the housing sector came together at Capita's Tackling Tenancy Fraud conference, providing delegates with crucial advice and expertise on effective housing tenancy fraud practices.

Vital topics covered on the day included:

Graham Knapper, Policy Advisor and Policy Lead for Social Housing Fraud for the Department for Communities and Local Government gave a keynote address on the new Prevention of Social Housing Fraud Act, which came into force in October 2013.

He explained that the act "gives providers tools and compels listed data-holders to share data...the underlying principle of the changes is to give more power to providers...tenancy fraud robs facilities from those who need it most".

Alan Bryce, Head of Counter Fraud at the Audit Commission and an Executive Committee Member of the Tenancy Fraud Forum discussed the local fight against tenancy fraud. "I want to iterate how much the landscape of tenancy fraud has improved and it's reallye ncouraging...tackling tenancy fraud needs to be pushed forward by housing managers and strong partnerships...every region in the country, by total, has recovered more properties from tenancy fraud than the year before, but there is still room for improvement."

Through in-depth consultation with industry experts, the conference addressed commonly-held ambiguities in policy and law, providing delegates with a cross-section of expertise and practical strategies to tackle tenancy fraud.

Alex Esson is the Marketing Executive at Capita Conferences
