Safety warning after explosion at house

Posted 06.12.12

The ALMO Gloucester City Homes (GCH) is warning residents about the risk of using automatic air fresheners in close proximity to gas fires, following an explosion at a house in Tredworth.

Fire Safety Officers investigating the explosion at a Wheatstone Road house believe it was caused due to an automatic air freshener being placed too close to the gas fire in the living room, causing the vapour to ignite. The blaze began to spread as clothing left to dry in front of the fire then caught fire.

GCH Chief Executive Ashley Green issued a warning to residents, saying:

"I would like to emphasise to residents that air fresheners or other products containing flammable materials like aerosols or similar containers should not be placed on or near a heat source or open flame.

"Whilst this incident wasn't caused by a faulty appliance, it highlights how important gas safety is and why tenants should always let qualified gas engineers into their homes to do their annual gas safety check."
