Crown Estate Purchase Completed by Peabody

Peabody has completed the purchase of Cumberland Market, Millbank, Victoria Park and Lee Green estates from The Crown Estate for £140.8 million.

The sale of the estates has been controversial, with tenants concerned about the possible loss of their existing rights. However, as part of the purchase agreement, Peabody is legally bound to honour existing residents' rights on key areas - including rent setting, succession and security of tenure.

The sale agreement also requires Peabody to continue letting to keyworkers at the same level as The Crown Estate.

Roger Bright, Chief Executive of The Crown Estate, said:

"The sale to Peabody represents an excellent outcome, not just for existing residents but for everyone who cares about keyworker housing in London."

Stephen Howlett, Chief Executive of Peabody said:

"By preserving arrangements for keyworkers, by honouring existing tenancy rights, and by offering an exciting portfolio of additional community services to residents, we believe we are worthy successors to the Crown Estate legacy."

Neath Port Talbot Transfers Stock Despite Protests

Neath Port Talbot Council has transferred its 9,200 homes to the housing association NPT Homes.

The transfer is despite protests after the Information Commissioner told the Council in January it should have handed over its 9,300 tenants' addresses to anti-stock transfer campaigners.

The Defend Council Housing group had requested the information to write to tenants putting its case before the stock transfer ballot ended on 16 March last year. The Group believed the Information Commissioner's decision had 'discredited' the stock transfer.

The transfer was supported by some 57% of tenants on a turnout of 62%.

As a result of the transfer, NPT Homes will invest £220 million to bring the homes up to the Welsh housing quality standard over six years.
