Maldon District Council: Strategic Housing Service

The Strategic Housing Service provided by Maldon District Council is 'fair' with excellent prospects for improvement, according to a report released by the Audit Commission.

On a scale from zero to three stars, the Audit Commission inspection team gave the service a One-star rating.

An earlier inspection, in 2009, had rated it as 'poor' with 'uncertain' prospects for improvement. This time, inspectors found that the Council is working well with partners to meet the housing needs of the area and to increase the number of affordable homes. But it needs to do more around private sector housing and the time some households have to wait for adaptations to their homes.

Mark Elsworth, Audit Commission Lead Housing Inspector, said:

"The Council has made significant progress since our last inspection. More homes are being built that local people can afford and good quality housing advice and assistance is being provided to households in housing need.

"It has clear plans to improve services further, particularly around private sector housing and adaptations to people's homes, and we are confident that these will be delivered."

The report identifies several strengths, including:

Weaknesses noted include:

Maldon District Council transferred its housing stock in 1995 to Moat Housing but remains responsible for strategic housing services across the district.
