Supporting People Programme Leads to Savings Elsewhere

The report by analysts Capgemini, has estimated that the £1.6 billion invested through Supporting People has saved other services £3.41 billion - through reduced costs in homelessness, tenancy failure, crime, health and residential care packages.

The Supporting People programme helps over a million people to live independently in their own homes - including 800,000 older people; 40,000 single homeless people; 36,000 people with mental health problems and 8,000 women at risk of domestic violence.

Supporting People also leads to other benefits, such as reducing the risk of social exclusion, increasing educational chances for children and improving the quality of life for vulnerable people.

This year, for the first time ever, the £1.6 billion allocated to councils through Supporting People will come with no strings attached - leaving councils free to direct the money to where they see their most vulnerable residents.
