Foyer in Focus: Market Rasen Foyer - Foyer Health

The Market Rasen Foyer is part of the Axiom Housing Association, which also owns and manages the Wisbech, Petersborough, and Paines Mill-St. Neots Foyers. It is accredited with the Foyer Federation and opened in 1996 and accommodates 20 young people between the ages of 16 and 30.

At the Foyer, each resident has their own furnished study bedroom and access to communal facilities, including a lounge, laundry room, kitchens and shower rooms. There is also a computer room offering a variety of learning opportunities, including Learn Direct courses and an in-house life-skills qualification. A sound proof music room with mixing decks, drums and keyboard is also available for residents’ use.

The Market Rasen Foyer launched their healthy eating programme with a week of activities for its residents. The week began with a tour of the Starbucks bakery to see what goes into the making of breads and cakes. The festivities continued the next day with a visit from a local apiarist, Brian Oxborrow, who gave a talk about honey bees and harvesting. The day ended with residents making their own bees wax candles.

A visit from Joanna Walgate, owner of Market Rasen's local health food shop Vitality, was on the agenda for the next day. She provided a cooking demonstration for the residents and many participated in games involving healthy fruits and vegetables. This week of activity marks the beginning of the Foyer’s 12 week cookery programme and the Foyer Federation’s 12 month Healthy Eating Programme.

The new Foyer Health campaign is a three year programme funded by the Big Lottery. While currently focusing on healthy eating in its first year, the programme will move into physical activity promotion in its second year and emotional well-being during the third and final year.

During the first year of the programme, Foyers around the UK have been promoting healthy eating with taster sessions involving cookery courses and lessons about shopping for the right food.

Our regular Foyer articles are contributed by the Foyer Federation. For some while they have been written by Louise Meincke, its Policy and Communications Officer. Sadly for us, she is moving to a new role with Consortium for Street Children. We wish her well in her job.

We can, however, assure regular followers of this page that Foyer in Focus will continue to appear.
