Genesis Community's Voice of Young People has once again been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the London community.
The Spotlight's on us project, directed by 12 young people between the ages of 13 and 22 years, from Brent, has been short-listed in the upcoming Annual Black & Minority Ethnic Social Housing Awards, in the Outstanding Community Project for Young People category.
The Spotlight's on us project involved the creation of a hard-hitting documentary focusing on the issues that effect young people, including ASBO's, homelessness, education, racism and human rights.
Key figures interviewed in the documentary included Hazel Blears, Minister of State for Crime, Security and Communities and Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, as well as the criminologist and award winning documentary maker, Roger Graef.
The unique project received nothing but praise and positive feedback from media and organisations alike after its official launch, in November 2005. It received nearly 1,000 requests for copies of the DVD documentary.
The documentary also won the Peter Duffy Award at the Liberty, Justice and Law Society Human Rights Awards, in December 2005. In February 2006, it saw its way into Parliament.
Weslo Housing Management has been allowed to register with Communities Scotland after nearly five years of discussion. As Weslo had three executive directors on its Board, there were objections to it registering as a social landlord when Communities Scotland was set up in 2001.
Weslo did not register as a private landlord under rules introduced in the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2004, arguing that its history in social housing prevented it being classed as a private company. This left Weslo faced with a potential fine of £5,000.
Communities Scotland have monitored Weslo since it first made a request to register in 2002 and are satisfied that staff members are not paid for their role as board members. The Agency agreed to register the Association, providing that directors are in a minority at Board meetings and none of them serve as Chair of the Board.
