Foyer in Focus: Halton YMCA Foyer

Halton YMCA Foyer gained Accredited Foyer status from the Foyer Federation in 2001. As an accommodation provider, the Foyer has 69 rooms for young people aged between 16-25 years.

Halton YMCA Foyer held its Annual Celebration evening on Friday 2 March at the Holiday Inn, at Runcorn. The theme of the evening was 'Working in Partnership.'

The event was attended by over 90 guests, which included many local partners, as well as staff and residents of the Foyer. Residents were the hosts for the evening, introducing speakers, a video presentation and the presentation of certificates to both partners and service users. Two service users gave testimonies about their experiences of living in the Foyer and the invaluable support given that has allowed them to make major changes to their lives.

Halton YMCA residents enjoy the practical support offered by the Foyer's Support Team. This is in place to provide a quality service to ensure that the residents of Halton YMCA are given a chance and purpose to succeed into independent living. The team offers advice and support on housing matters, training, education and employment, and is also in charge of the Independent Living Skills programme.

The Independent Living Skills programme is designed to provide the opportunity for residents to develop their knowledge and understanding of personal development skills, such as personal hygiene, cooking and social skills, and to demonstrate that they have developed practical skills that will be of benefit to their future well-being. The Foyer is currently working with the National Health Service, through the Healthy Eating Programme: In 6 weekly sessions, up to 6 residents at a time learn how to cook and budget properly.

The Foyer also prides itself in going beyond the life skills programme. In order for residents to learn team work and gain confidence, the Foyer organises regular activity days, such as football, pool and bowling tournaments, visits to museums, and canal barge outings.

The Foyer encourages residents to work with staff in drawing up action plans of their future progress and move into independent living. Once a resident has moved on, the Foyer continues its support and contact for up to 6 months.
