Shelter's unique expertise in housing and homelessness issues is reflected in our programme of short courses for those working in housing or related fields. In addition, we offer a range of skills and management courses suitable for anyone looking to develop or improve a particular skill.

Key Housing Aid and Advice: Part A
London: 11-12 and 18-19 May
Manchester: 11-12 and 18-19 May
A four-day course for recently appointed advisers. This course ensures that participants understand the main legal framework, options and issues that affect housing aid and advice work. The first two days focus on security of tenure and the second two days concentrate on homelessness and allocations.
Homelessness Law: Introductory
London: 9-10 May
Birmingham: 2-3 May
The course provides an understanding of the principles, processes and duties inherent in the homelessness legislation. It encourages familiarity with the Code of Guidance, and looks at the main principles relating to housing allocations.
Homelessness: Update
London: 18 May
York: 22 May
This course will update experienced participants with case law and other recent developments regarding homelessness and allocations.
Young People, Housing and Homelessness
London: 2-3 May
York: 17-18 May
This course provides invaluable knowledge for anyone who advises young people and needs to understand their housing rights and the legislative basis for service provision.
Asylum, Refugees and Housing Rights
Manchester: 16 May
Explains the asylum process and its relation to housing entitlements and the rights of refugees, people with exceptional leave, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave, and asylum seekers. The course provides an update on statute, case law and practice, and the practical issues that arise.
Tackling Antisocial Behaviour and Harassment
London: 3 May
This course provides an overview of the legal remedies available to landlords and residents, highlights good practice in managing cases effectively and covers the practical strategies landlords can use to minimise antisocial behaviour and harassment.
Security of Tenure: Advanced
London: 26 May
This course will examine the more intricate issues concerning security of tenure and extend participants' knowledge of the law relating to occupation of residential accommodation.
Secure and Assured Tenancies: Problems in Practice
London: 3 May
An advanced level course which focuses on some of the key legal issues affecting secure and assured tenancies and updates delegates on recent case law developments, focusing in particular on possession orders, possession warrants, and tolerated trespassers.
Housing Benefit: Intermediate
London: 23-24 May
Manchester: 16-17 May
Provides experienced participants with a greater understanding of aspects of the Housing Benefit system. The course examines more complicated Housing Benefit scenarios, giving participants both the confidence and knowledge to identify decisions, which might be challenged.

Essential Management Skills
London: 25-26 May
This two-day event provides participants with the skills required to manage effectively, understand the role of managers, and identify effective management practices.
Managing Aggression and Violence
London: 16 May
This course will enable participants to develop the skills and processes necessary to manage and defuse highly charged and difficult situations. It is suitable for anyone who faces the possibility of aggression and violence from members of the public and/or service users.
Coping with Stress
London: 10 May
This course aims to give practical tips and solutions for coping with stress. The course will allow delegates to identify their stresses, but will focus primarily on developing suitable actions to support themselves and others.
